Swim

Having taken lessons, my six-year-old niece one day announced

to her grandfather how well she could swim.

“How far can you swim?” he asked.

“I don’t know,” Charlene replied.

Pointing to a table across the room, he asked, “Can you swim from

here to the table?” When she answered no, he pointed to a closer

spot and asked, “Can you swim from here to there?”

“No,” she replied.

Perplexed, Charlene’s grandfather asked, “How is it you can swim

so well, but you can’t swim from here to there?”

“Grandpa,” she replied, “there’s no water.”
