My sponsor said to me early in recovery, "Find five things to be grateful for each day."
Number one is my sobriety. He was my NA sponsor, even though he went to the AA fellowship, because like me, he qualified for both sides of the hall. He was also my spiritual adviser. He said, "A grateful alcoholic/addict will never have a reason to pick up." He may find lots of excuses, but no reason to pick up a drink or a drug. He said, "If you have one hand in the hand of YOUR God and the other hand in the hand of another still suffering alcoholic/addict, you will neve have any hands left to pick up your drug of choice in today."
