TITLE: False Lights

SCRIPTURE: Genesis 3:1-6, James 4:7

THE STORY FOR TODAY:

The Hamiltons, who were spending vacation time in a cottage at the sea, visited an old lighthouse in the area. "What does a lighthouse do, Daddy?" asked little Joanna.

"It shines its light far and wide, so ships out at sea are guided to a safe place to dock," Dad told her.

"Yes, but do you know what some wicked men used to do long ago?" asked Mom. She pointed out toward the sea. "Can you see those rocks way over there?" she asked. "Well, sometimes evil men, called wreckers, would light their lamps and swing them over there near those rocks. The ships' captains would think that was a safe harbor, and then they'd end up on the rocks."

"That's horrible!" gasped Madeline. "Why would anyone do that?"

"Well, after the ship crashed into the rocks, the wreckers would steal the cargo," replied Mom. "Ships often carried gold in those days."

"I'm glad there are no wreckers now," said Joanna fervently.

"Me too!" agreed Jamie.

Madeline nodded. She shuddered as she studied the sharp, cruel looking rocks.

"You know, kids, there are still some wreckers around," said Dad, "though I don't mean the ship-wrecking kind." He frowned. "Satan is a wrecker-a master wrecker," Dad continued. "He makes evil things look so attractive and appealing that we're tempted to enjoy them."

"Like what?" asked Jamie curiously.

"Well, how about some of the popular music?" suggested Dad. "Satan would like us to listen to bad words and ideas, so he sometimes disguises them in a popular, catchy tune."

Madeline nodded. "How about things like smoking or drinking?" she asked. "Some kids at school try them in order to get in with the popular group."

"Good example," said Dad. "Satan wants to persuade us that it's all right to do those kinds of things."

"Ships often got wrecked on those rocks out there, and our lives can get wrecked by sin when we ignore what God says and allow ourselves to be misled by Satan's false lights," added Mom.

Satan himself transforms himself into an angel of light. 2 Corinthians 11:14

HOW ABOUT YOU?
Is Satan making something bad appear good to you? Does something you know is wrong seem not to be so bad? Remember that Satan is a wrecker of lives. He'll do his best to make evil things appear good and attractive to you-like he made the forbidden fruit seem good and attractive to Eve. He wants you to believe it's okay to do things God forbids. Don't let him fool you. Listen to God's Word and learn how you can resist the devil and live God's way.
