The worst thing about having this illness is that it can only hurt us when we let it. I can remember thinking this is going to cost me somehow, but it'll be worth it, and then later on when it wasn't worth it, thinking how I could've been so foolish I had been warned. As newcomers we're told there are no victims here, only willing participants. I suppose I could have found out a way to deal with having addiction without having to actively engage in it first. I think few of us do for most of us we feel the heat before we see the light. By choosing to live our life based on the program of recovery we won't be letting ourselves be hurt by this illness even though we still have it. Now that's something worth signing up for.
