Default The Night Light

The Night Light

1 Peter 2:9 - But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into His wonderful light. (NIV)

Matthew 5:14-16 - You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven. (NIV)

A few weeks ago, the night light in our bathroom needed a new bulb. When I went to buy one, there were several kinds of night lights to choose from. In the end, I decided on one that required no bulb and used very little electricity. When I put it into the outlet, I didn't see much light, and even when I closed the door, it was quite dim. However, that night when all was dark around us, the night light shone brightly enough to light up the whole room.

One night when I was up, I looked at this little night light and how it lit up our bathroom, and I wondered about us as Christians. How well does our light shine in this dark world? Does our love for Jesus shine through our words and deeds and bring glory to our Father in heaven? It may not seem, at times, as if our light can be seen, but we never really know how much we may affect those around us.

John 8:12 - When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life." (NIV)

Jesus is the light shining in us. He is always with us to help us find our way, even in the darkest night. If we let Him live in us and shine through us, we can bring light to a dark world and fill this world with the Father's glory.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, we thank You for Your Son, Jesus Christ, the light of the world. May He shine in us and through us so that others may see Your glory. Set our hearts on fire, we pray, and fill us with Your Holy Spirit, so that all that we say and do will honor You. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
