Default Relax and Enjoy

Relax and Enjoy

John 13:34 “A new command I give you: Love one another.”

“I’ve always felt that my family and friends want something from me,” admitted a friend. “One demands my time though I have none to spare, while another takes a large emotional bite out of my heart, and still another asks spiritual questions I can’t answer. It never occurred to me someone might want to just be with me. Could this be?”

Some of us have a difficult time imagining what it might be like not having to do something. When friends come to visit us, we hurry around making certain everything is just right. We may be preoccupied with saying the right words or leading the conversation to worthwhile topics. We work so hard that sometimes being with other people is exhausting.

Wouldn’t it be great to just sit with our loved ones, enjoying their company without giving advice, stuffing them with food, trying to figure them out, or attempting to make them spiritually fulfilled? What a relief it would be.

Jesus said, “Love one another.” Perhaps one way to show our love is simply to take pleasure in each other’s company — without any strings attached. It’s definitely worth a try.

Lord, please help me to relax
and enjoy being with my family and friends.

Joan C. Webb
