Default Family Attitudes

FAMILY ATTITUDES

This time of year, we are around our families possibly more than we are other times of the year. Many times we start out excited we are going to see everyone. We get together and then our attitudes change. Soon we are ready to go back to our own lives because our family is on our nerves once again. Maybe, this year, let’s approach things differently. Let’s look for ways to help our family members, listen to them and be grateful they are a part of our lives. We can make our next family time together a positive one by changing our attitudes and choosing to show God’s love to our families.

SCRIPTURE: 1 Peter 3:8b “Sympathize with each other. Love each other as brothers and sisters. Be tenderhearted, and keep a humble attitude.” (NLT)

ACTION STEPS:
1. Write down something wrong that always happens around the family.
2. List what others and what you do when these things go wrong.
3. Pray asking God to give you the right response to your family.
4. Know God wants you to have a right attitude going in and stay focused on Him.

PRAYER: Dear Lord, we pray You will help us with our attitudes around our family. We know they can sometimes get on our nerves. We know we sometimes have the wrong attitude when we are around them. Help us today to prepare for our next family get-together. We know we can do this by praying, reading Your word and seeking to change our hearts and attitudes. Help us be the right change in the lives of our families. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

REMEMBER:
God wants us to love our family and not take each other for granted.

What are we doing today with our families where we have the right attitudes that are pleasing to God?

What can we do today to better prepare our hearts and minds for our next family encounter?

Thinking and preparing ahead of time before going to family gatherings will help our attitudes to be more pleasing to God.

As we prepare the food for the holidays, let’s prepare our minds and hearts to seek ways to motivate and show love to our families.

FOCUS: Hebrews 10:24 “Let us think of ways to motivate one another to acts of love and good works.” (NLT)

The outcome of our family get-together will be a more positive one when we choose to change our attitudes before we even get there.
